11 Sept Peterboro' to Kelling

A lovely sleep last night! We got ready to leave on our adventure to Kelling on the north coast of Norfolk. Rang Dad for his birthday - he's apparently doing really well after his op. so that is great. Also chatted to Cate and Dave - so lovely to see you two.

We left Folksworth before 11...

Then headed north towards Norfolk. Our first stop was at Castle Rising, a very interesting castle built in the 12th century with huge ramparts built around it.

We were surprised to realise that Sandringham (where the Queen escapes to) was near here; never realised it was in Norfolk before. We next stopped at the very pretty village of Holt to pick up supplies. Dad and I wandered around the wee shoppes for awhile. The buildings here are built with flint and are very distinctive. Only another 2 miles on we arrived at Kelling Barn...none of the houses are numbered but they all have names. Tony and Helen have done wonders with this house and it is really cute and lovely.

After a cuppa we set out for a walk to the sea. It is about 15 minutes away through lane ways, around cattle in paddocks and sugar beet crops. Very pretty; then we reached the pebbly beach and the North Sea. Far out we could see windmills built in the sea. There were pillboxes and even guns that were there for coastal defence during WW2 (now just for interest of course) on Muckleburgh Hill that we walked up beside the sea. We went to the top of the hill and got a good view of the area. It was rainy and dull but would be superb on a sunny day.

It was an invigorating walk and lovely to see quite a bit of the area. Picked a dish full of blackberries when we got home and now Helen won't let me in the kitchen so we are being Lord and Lady Muck listening to Mozart with our glass of red! We are upstairs looking out over the harvested wheatfields. There are 2 Apache helicopters going round and round over us - we're hiding so they can't find us!! These are the type that Prince Harry flies. We've seen loads of different birds too - beautiful. Tony showed us pictures of the front yard covered in snow...so picturesque.

  1. Miles? Rainy and dull? ... you're in England!

Had a call out of the blue from Peter McKelvey last night. It was texts actually and wasn't a good time to chat as I was in music rehearsal. But they may call tonight some time. Going to Northern Ireland at all?

    Love from us.
